A yearly mammogram is one of the most important checkups for women to get, however, it's not always a top priority for busy women. The Swedish American Center for Women is trying to change that.
In an effort to encourage women to get their annual mammogram, the center is offering a "Girls Night Out," which will feature a free chair massage, beauty treatment, refreshments, and trunk shows. The event is free, besides the cost of the mammogram, and a mammogram appointment is needed to attend.
"Anything that encourages women to get screening tests is a good idea, which is why we're offering this new program to our community," Manager of Pediatrics and Women's Outpatient Services Paula Culvey says. "We believe that women will like coming to an event like this because it takes their mind off of the mammogram. Also, being surrounded by your friends adds to the safety net. It's more relaxing than sitting in a waiting room wearing a gown."
Appointments are available between 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Women, on the second floor of the Renaissance Pavilion. Individuals can choose a date that works best for them, or groups can reserve a block of appointments by calling 815-391-7676. Callers should have the name and phone numbers of those attending and participants should arrive 30 minutes prior to their appointment.
Dates of upcoming events are as follows:
The American Cancer Society recommends a yearly mammogram and medical breast exam for all women beginning at age 40.
