WREX is inviting anyone and everyone to come join us for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to raise money for cancer research.

Cancer has hit close to him for many of us at WREX, especially with the loss of longtime 13 News Anchor Heather Pick back in 2008.

Pick was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. She defeated the disease only to learn that it had returned in an incurable form in 2004. Pick courageously battled the cancer, making her fight public in hopes of finding new treatments for the deadly disease.

This year's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is being held at Martin Park in Loves Park off of Riverside just east of Cliffbreakers by the river, Saturday October 20 at 9:00 a.m. with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m.

In Rockford, this is the eleventh year of the event. In 2011, the event raised $315,000 with over 5,000 people present at the walk. The goal for this year's event is to raise $325,000 with 6,000 walkers present on October 20.

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer unites us to walk together as the most powerful force to end breast cancer," said Katherine L. Griem, M.D., president of the American Cancer Society's Illinois Division. "The progress we are making is remarkable, but we need volunteers to join us in the fight."

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation.
