Almost, but not quite. Rockford city leaders are close to finishing part of the $40 million Morgan Street Bridge project. They thought it would take a few more weeks to finalize.
Rockford's first roundabout at College Avenue and Seminary Street is scheduled to be finished by the end of next week, according to the city's Public Works Department Director Tim Hanson.
The wheels are spinning on this project but there's still work to be done. On Wednesday, concrete will pour into the roundabout's inner circle.
"It's going to be a darker color. It's called a garnet which is a dark crimson brown color." -says Hanson.
Some signs still need to be put up and street lighting needs to be finished. Nearby resident Jimmy Venable says before this project, at night, the neighborhood was pitch dark.
"I really like the streetlights. I feel more secure with them being lit up like they are." -says Venable.
With all the new features put up, some old ones had to come down, including Venable's fence back in July.
"I just came home one day and noticed it was down."
It was torn down for sidewalk construction. A makeshift wire fence has been put in for now. According to Venable, project leaders say they'll fix it.
"I don't know when, but they said it was supposed to be put back." -he says.
Overall, Venable says he's happy about the whole project. He wants it to make the area safer and drivers more cautious.
"I'm just hoping that they will slow down, especially when people are trying to cross the street. Slow down, take time. You don't have to be in a hurry." -adds Venable.
Hanson says the actual Morgan Street Bridge itself is moving along on schedule. It's set to be up and running by the first quarter of 2014.
