One of the best endorsements a candidate can get is from a local newspaper and now there is a chance for you to get involved with it. The Rockford Register Star opened it's editorial board meeting to the public as they questioned the candidates in a whole new way.
Congressional candidates for the 17th District Cheri Bustos and Bobby Schilling had to face questions from the six editorial board members as well as the public. The board live streamed it's meeting on its website allowing voting to follow along and post questions.
One of the most contentious issues was brought up from an internet regarding shipping jobs overseas.
Tom Gaulrapp wrote, "I asked Rep Schilling a few weeks ago if he would support legislation that would tax, fine or dissuade corps from shipping jobs to China and he said no. I'd like to know why he would not support such commonsense legislation that would help save American jobs."
"The bill that they put together actually penalizes John Deere and Caterpillar by having jobs offshore. I am unwilling to go in and penalize our American companies that have business offshore. Look as I said earlier, 95 percent of our customers are outside of the U.S.," says Schilling.
"I support the Bring American Jobs Home Act. I support it because it focuses on jobs here. I focuses on making sure jobs stay strong here not in China," says Bustos.
The 17th District Congressional race is just one of the contests the Register Star will pick a candidate to endorse. The editorial board says the questioning session is part of a long process involving research and discussion before a candidate is finally selected.
"We consider it part of our community duty. We don't think we can comment on what a public official does if we have no say in who that public official would be," says Wall Hass, Register Star Editorial Page Editor
