Nihan & Martin Closes Its Doors

There are only hours left for a long-standing Rockford pharmacy. And it's a tough pill to swallow for many people in the community. Nihan & Martin's been a Rockford icon for more than 80 years. People call it another once locally- owned business, falling to corporate competition.

"They just can't compete with Walgreens, mail order, Walmart for prescriptions," says Janet McGregor, the owner of Canterbury Books and Tours. "So I guess that was the last straw. It's not good. We're sad."

Nihan and Martin won't have to compete with Walgreens, after the corporation bought the pharmacy from its current owner Omnicare. Omnicare's owned Nihan & Martin since 1997.

"Everybody that I've worked for and worked with and that have been customers are very heartbroken about this," says Therese Fleury, who worked for Nihan & Martin for 24 years. "Corporation came in and pretty much didn't care about the little guy anymore."

The store's been in the Highcrest shopping center since the 1950s. Rosemary Cleary-Drnek was a Nihan & Martin customer for almost 40 years.

"It's just like you lost a good friend," says Cleary-Drnek. "So you get to you know the people that work there. It's different, but change comes whether you like it or not."

Great Harvest is a next door neighbor to the pharmacy. The owner says it will be strange to get used to a new business in the space.

"We're sad to see Nihans go, but we're hopeful that somebody else will get an opportunity to do well here also," Barb Kaiser says.

At the end of the day today, a dozen people will be out of a job. G.A. Wright is the company in charge of the liquidation sale starting September 20th.

"It's an opportunity for the community to come in and say goodbye and get fantastic deals," Gene Koch, G.A Wright Retail Consultant says. "I've been in retail a long time, so when I see another retailer go away, it's economic times. It's the way the world is going."

All current Nihan & Martin prescriptions will be transferred to Walgreens pharmacies.
