We're getting a clearer picture about what happened inside a vehicle where a Janesville woman was shot dead on Interstate 90 early Sunday morning.
Beloit police tell our sister station WKOW in Madison that there were three people inside the moving vehicle when the shooting happened. The driver, a man from Beloit whose name has not been released. The victim, Lori Daniels, 36, of Janesville, who was a front-seat passenger. And the shooting suspect, Kody Walsh, 22, of Rockford. Authorities are working to determine the relationship between Daniels and Walsh, but say they were acquaintances.
According to the man driving the vehicle, he and Walsh had driven down to a bar in Rockford from Beloit. There they met Daniels, who asked them for a ride back to Beloit. The driver says everything was normal on the ride back, the three were just listening to music when all of a sudden Walsh shot Daniels in the head from the backseat. At that point, the man tells police Walsh made him drive back to a home in Beloit where he forced him out of the SUV, shot at him and missed, then stole the vehicle with Daniels' body still inside. That's when the chase ensued, through South Beloit and into Rockford where Walsh eventually crashed the vehicle, fired shots at police, and ran away.
Police say Walsh is still on the run and should be considered armed and dangerous. Police say Walsh could be anywhere, either hiding out in Rockford, Beloit or somewhere else. He's wanted on a warrant for first degree murder and he's also wanted on an unrelated domestic battery warrant.
The Illinois State Police Department is leading the investigation. If you see Walsh call 911.
