The Winnebago County Coroner's office releases the name of a woman shot dead inside a car on I-90 near Rockford.
Lori Daniels, 36, of Janesville, died of a single gunshot wound early Sunday morning.
Illinois State Police have identified and are looking for a suspect, Kody Walsh, 22, of Rockford. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Officers in Beloit received word about the shooting and alerted other police departments to be on the lookout for a suspect vehicle. One South Beloit officer spotted the car, initiated a chase to catch the driver, but it wasn't enough to stop the alleged shooter.
"They were unable to locate the suspect, so at this point, he's still at large," said Illinois State Police Captain Jim Winters. "Currently he's wanted on a domestic battery warrant that the Sheriff's department currently holds," said Winters.
Pursuit of the vehicle continued into Rockford, where Walsh crashed into a Rockford Township Highway Department fence, near Springfield Avenue and School Street. Walsh then took off on foot.
"The suspect jumped out of the car, fled from the officers, while he was fleeing he fired at least one round at the pursuing officers," Winters adds.
No officers were injured after Walsh shot at them, and no officers fired back at him.
Jerry Clutter, who lives in a neighborhood nearby, says his wife Barbara thought she heard someone running down Florence Avenue shortly after hearing a crash and gunshots around 4 a.m on Sunday. Another man living close by, Adam Steele, did not see Walsh, or hear any activity, until 8:00 a.m. Sunday.
"The first thing I noticed was helicopters, they were doing fly-overs, and I thought that was a little odd. My wife and I stepped outside for about 5 minutes, we noticed police had blockades, they had a couple of cars. There was actually an officer on the street, and once he noticed us, he asked us to go directly back into the house, and lock the doors," said Steele.
If you know of Walsh's whereabouts or anything involving the case, you're asked to call Winnebago County Sheriff's Police at (815) 319-6300, or CrimeStoppers at (815) 963-7867. A $1,000 reward is available to anyone with information that leads to Walsh's arrest.
