The site of a former energy plant at Avon and Chestnut Streets is getting a cleanup.
The plant was used to manufacture gas until 1947 and that process creates a tar-like byproduct that eventually started to leak in vaults under the facility. ComEd is using a program through the Environmental Protection Agency, so the land can eventually be used for something else.
"[There are] no plans for the space at this time," ComEd Spokesperson Paul Callighan says. "We'll leave it as a green space and see what develops in the future."
ComEd no longer owns the property, it now belongs to a family-owned company.
