Months of negotiations later, Freeport Police finally have a new contract.
The contract is for four years and includes a gradual wage increase. Health insurance was also changed and members of the police department now have the same plan as member of the Freeport Fire Department.
"I cannot emphasize enough the work that the men and women of the police department do here in Freeport, and most police departments," Mayor George Gaulrapp said. "They never get paid enough, they really don't. And people will say, 'Don't say that,' but its truthful. If we could pay them more, we would."
Approximately 40 Freeport officers are covered by the contract.
