Drivers should always buckle up and stay sober while on the road, and Belvidere and Boone County Police are stepping up enforcement to make sure that happens.
The Labor Day Campaign of the departments' Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program Grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation will begin on August 17 and run through September 3. During that time police will conduct additional specialized patrols for seatbelt violations and DUIs.
Patrols will be conducted during both day and night hours. Over 700 people were injured during the Labor Day weekend in 2011. Nine died, three of those fatalities involved impaired drivers.
Off-duty officers will be hired back to conduct the patrols.
