Snappers Win With 8th Inning Walk

Back-to-back homers by Miguel Sano and Kennys Vargas off Chiefs' starter, Yao-Lin Wang gave the Beloit Snappers an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Snappers went on to beat the Peoria Chiefs 3-2 Monday night at Pohlman Field.

Matt Tomshaw worked seven scoreless innings before being relieved by Mason Melotakis in the top of the eighth inning. Tomshaw allowed only three hits, while striking out four with no walks.
The Chiefs scored their first run of the game off Melotakis when Jorge Soler scored on an overthrow by Vargas trying to get the runner out at third. Soler doubled to lead off the top of the eighth.  Oliver Zapata then hit a sac fly scoring Wes Darvill to tie the game 2-2.
Peoria's Wang worked six innings, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out four.
Nate Roberts led off the bottom of the eighth with a lead off single. Wang-Wei Lin then reached first on an error by pitcher, Austin Reed, advancing Roberts to second. Roberts attempted to advance on a fly ball, but was out at third. Sano singled, advancing Lin to third. Vargas was intentionally walked loading the bases for Drew Leachman. Leachman walked scoring Lin breaking the tie, 3-2.
DJ Baxendale came in to close out the game in the top of the ninth relieving Melotakis who went one inning allowing one hit and two runs, while striking out one. Baxendale picked up his first save of the season with the 3-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs.
The Snappers return to action Wednesday to start a three-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Milwaukee Brewers Class-A affiliate.  On the mound will be Wisconsin native, Cole Johnson, who is 1-1 with a 1.11 ERA in 24.1 innings pitched. Wednesdays are Wild Card Wednesdays at the ballpark! We will pick an event to happen in the game, and if it happens, you're all winners! Also, all game long, sodas and 12 oz. drafts of Miller products are just $2 thanks to Ott-Schweitzer Distributing and Pepsi.
