A double-decker Megabus carrying 81 passengers hit a concrete pillar supporting an overpass on I-55 in southern Illinois Thursday afternoon.
The bus was on its way to St. Louis from Chicago when it crashed. Authorities say it appears that a blown tire caused the crash. The crash investigation could take weeks, but authorities do not currently believe the crash was the result of driver error. The bus was manufactured in 2011 and just passed a maintenance check a few days ago.
Aditi Avhad of Mumbai, India, a 25-year-old University of Missouri graduate student, was killed in the crash. She was sitting above the driver. Approximately 47 other people were injured and transported to hospitals, but none with life-threatening injuries. At least five of those individuals were transported by helicopter.
The crash occurred near Litchfield at mile marker 57, about 55 miles northeast of St. Louis.
