The man police believed open fire on a crowd of men, women, and children during a midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" has been formally charged.
James Holmes, a 24-year-old former graduate student faces 24 counts of murder, 116 counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of explosives after a court appearance on Monday, July 30. He was charged twice for each victim killed, one set of charges for possessing an attitude of universal malice, and the other for shooting after deliberation.
Twelve people were killed and 58 were wounded or injured during the July 20 shooting in a Colorado movie theater. Police arrested Holmes outside the theater shortly afterward. Authorities say Holmes also elaborately booby trapped his apartment, causing police to evacuate surrounding buildings.
Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist prior to the shooting and experts believe much of his trial will focus on his sanity.
