An expansion to Rochelle's rail system puts it on the right track for new business and more jobs. It's already landed one company and it hopes to land more.
Last week, we were in the hub city as Nippon Sharyo, the company that makes rail cars, celebrated its opening. Now we are back to see the City of Rochelle Railroad line expand to the next new business.
"I can't tell you how much the rail access means to us, it's one of the biggest reasons we are moving here to Rochelle," says Joe Ebens, Coated Sand Solutions plant manager
The Coated Sand Solutions'' facility is built, but won't open until September. Its main sand pit is in Ottawa, Illinois, but its bringing the raw material to Rochelle. The plant manager says it's easier to put the resin coating on in Rochelle because they get it to its ultimate destination faster.
"Because of the two class one railroads, BNSF and the UP, being here in town. And being able to switch through the city rail system onto the class one rail systems to service our customers throughout the United States and even into Canada," says Ebens.
Coated Sand Solutions ultimately plans to hire 70 workers, but will only bring on 40 of them this year. But even without more new companies coming in Rochelle will get a big payoff from the money it will make in switching fees for expanding its line.
"This railroad line that revenue will go from $1.2 million to over $3 million within the next three years. So a small investment, $5 million to build this rail will generate millions of millions of dollars revenues for years to come," says Jason Anderson, City of Rochelle Economic Development Director.
The $5 million to expand the railroad line came from the U.S. Economic Development Council, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Rochelle.
Coated Sand Solution already has its application up online at http://www.ussilica.com/careers. Otherwise in three weeks you can stop by the factory and apply in person at 1951 S. Steward Road in Rochelle.
