Violent and scary are how two neighbors describe the area of Rockford where a man was gunned down in the street. Troy Crecy, 32, was shot after getting his hair cut. It happened at a time when some children are still out playing and at least one family on the block was still eating dinner.
"I heard somebody scream call the police. I looked out and saw a man lying on the ground," says Dora Davenport, she was eating dinner at the house next to the shooting.
Rockford Police say shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Crecy was shot outside a home near 11th avenue and 8th street. Neighbors say the man in the apartment cuts hair and Crecy was there to get his done when he went outside to greet someone in a car.
"From what everybody around here was saying is that he walked out of the house next door and a car pulled up and he said hey what's up then shot him and spun off," says Davenport.
Freda Fletcher's son is the barber. She says she doesn't know the victim but has been afraid in her neighborhood lately.
"Its an awful neighborhood. You have some good and bad like I said there are some people raising a family, they work everyday, they keep their nose clean. But then you have the bad elements," says Fletcher.
She plans to move out with her family this weekend. But for those like Davenport who will stay her 8-year-old son has some new rules.
"I told him I love you, you did nothing wrong but you are on lockdown. I said you can't go nowhere out of my sight. It's getting bad to where you aren't safe in your own home anymore," says Davenport.
This the second homicide for Rockford Police in a week. On Sunday a man was killed in his home on Henrietta Avenue. In both cases police are looking for more information. You can leave a tip by calling Crime Stoppers at (815) 963-STOP.
