June unemployment numbers released for Rockford area

Although the State of Illinois saw an increase in overall unemployment last month, unemployment in the Rockford metro area (which includes Winnebago and Boone Counties), fell compared to last year.

Rockford had the third highest decline in unemployment with a 0.9 percent drop to 11.5 percent. Payrolls in Rockford increased 1.6 percent, or by 2,400. Manufacturing was the largest growing sector in the Rockford metro area, adding 2,800 jobs. The Professional/Business Services sector came in second, adding 800 jobs. Sectors that saw declines include Retail Trade and Government, both with losses of 900 jobs.

"Manufacturing and other private-sector job growth continues to push our economy through an uneven recovery," Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Jay Rowell said. "This steady progress is encouraging even as we remain guarded on how world economic events in Europe, China, and elsewhere will be felt here at home."

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate measures individuals who are out of work but still seeking employment, even if they have exhausted benefits or are ineligible.

The unemployment rate in June 2011 was 12.4 percent in the Rockford metro area.
