The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department has gone live on a website that allows residents to see an interactive map of recent crime activity in their area.
CrimeMapping.com is a national website that allows visitors to generate reports, search by location, and filter for different time periods and types of crime. By joining the site, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department is hoping to "help reduce crime and further strengthen local community-oriented policing efforts."
Residents can also take advantage of a free service on the site that sends updates via email whenever a new crime takes place in their area. Users can register multiple times in order to keep track of crimes near their home, place of business, or their children's schools.
Data is uploaded to the system every 24 hours.
