We now know the name of the man, shot and killed at a Rockford home over the weekend. He is 54-year-old Michael Hughes. The scene at Michael Hughes' home was full of emotion. Family members filled his front yard, looking for answers as to why they're brother had to die this way.
"I'm really sad my brother had to leave the world like this," says Martha Baker, Hughes' sister. "He's taken from us for no reason."
Larry Hughes left his brother Michael's house Sunday, after grilling and having a drink with him. He went to his aunt's house just down the road. Less than an hour later, Larry heard the news no one ever wants to hear.
"Somebody said, 'Your brother just got killed.' I said, 'I know you lie. I just left Mike's house. He couldn't be dead.' Well he's dead," says Larry Hughes, Michael's brother.
According to neighbors and family members, Michael Hughes was shot and killed by two young boys, around the age of 18 or 19. They live in the apartment right behind Hughes. Hughes' brother says they harassed Michael many times, throwing trash in his yard and coming to his apartment to start trouble.
"This man here said he seen them," says Larry Hughes. "He said they put black ski masks on and ran into this front door, and when they got to tossing him in the front kitchen, that's when gun shots went off."
Hughes' neighbor Beverly Greer was in her apartment when she heard arguing, then two gunshots fired. She couldn't believe it.
"He was a really nice guy," Greer says. "He didn't ever really bother anybody in the neighborhood, so it was kind of surprising to see something like that happen to him."
The Rockford Police Department is still investigating to find out who committed this crime. Lieutenant Marc Welsh hopes to have more answers by tomorrow.
