The 24-year-old man accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others in a shooting spree during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," appeared in court for the first time on Monday.
James Holmes sported reddish-orange hair and showed little emotion as he appeared in front of a judge in a Colorado courtroom. According to authorities, the former graduate student is not cooperating with police and it is still unknown what prompted him to open fire on a theater full of men, women, and children.
District attorney Carol Chambers says it could be months before a decision is made on seeking the death penalty and at least a year before Holmes faces trial. He is expected to be formally charged on Monday, July 30 and is currently being held without bond.
Nine people are still in critical condition after the early Friday morning attack.
