Storms knock out electricity for thousands of people

Posted: Updated:
WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) -

Thousands of people in the Rockford area are left without electricity after Wednesday night's powerful storms.

ComEd reports more than 19,000 customers lost power during the storms.  That's mostly in Rockford, Machesney Park, Loves Park, Roscoe, Durand, and Shirland.

As of Thursday morning, more than 10,000 outages remained.

Rockford College is closed until 10:00 a.m., due to the outages.

Rockford Police report intersections without electricity along East State St. from Fairview to the east.  There are also reports of lights out along Riverside Boulevard from Alpine Road to Mulford Road.

Wires are down all over the area.  Police and ComEd advise you to not get close to downed lines.  Instead report them to 1-800-EDISON-1.

Repair crews are on their way out to start repairs, if they're not on the scene already.
