Decorated Rockford soldier killed by an IED in Afghanistan

According to the Department of Defense Sgt. Michael E. Ristau, 25, from Rockford, IL was killed in Zabul Province, Afghanistan Friday July 13, when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Ristau was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

He joined the Army right out of high school in 2004. During his career he earned several awards including the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

According to the Army Ristau was married and had one child.
