The runway at the Chicago Rockford International Airport is set to get a bit of a facelift.
The airport received $4,792,402 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Airport Improvement Program to upgrade its runway and taxiway. The upgrades will allow the airport to accommodate both current and additional air cargo traffic.
The airport received an almost $7 million grant last year for the first part of its runway rehabilitation project, its first major rehabilitation since 1983. Overlays were completed in 1993 and 2002 to extend the service life of the runway.
