Feed more than your stomach soon at McDonald's. Feed your mind. McDonald's slogan is "I'm Lovin' It". But right now, the company wants you to love the thought of a high school education. That's why the fast food chain's partnering with the Workforce Connection, to promote GED certificates.
"Education is key for the jobs of the future," says Paul Callighan, Workforce Investment Board Volunteer Chair. "And this is going to be one more way to make people aware of that initial step of having a high school equivalent diploma."
The new tray liners have information on how to earn your GED, with easy steps on taking the test, as well as economic benefits of earning a certificate.
"Having a high school equivalency certificate means a lot to the individual as well as their families in the way of self-esteem," says Linda Ballard, McDonald's Manager. "Not to mention the net worth over a lifetime."
According to last year's census figures, those who earn their GED or high school diploma make $180 more per week than those without one.
"Having McDonald's to be able to promote this with the tray liners at their restaurants in the area is just fantastic," says Callaghan.
The campaign runs until August, with more than 3,000 tray liners available at each McDonald's, including an informational table during lunch hours. At the end of it, a GED Fair at Rockford Career College.
"I think a lot of people did not get their high school education, get their diploma, for one reason or another," says Ballard. "Everyone knows somebody in the community and McDonald's has so many customers each day as well as workers that we like to be involved."
Another quick note. Right now GED tests cost $50. By January 2014, they'll be $120. That could be some incentive to act now.
