Drivers headed south on Interstate 39 might want to give themselves a little extra time to get to their destinations on Wednesday and Thursday.
Construction will affect traffic going south of Rockford from both Wisconsin and Chicago due to crews repairing a bridge on the ramp that takes traffic downstate from I-90. The repairs will lead to a seven-mile roundtrip detour for motorists.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the repairs will begin around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, and are expected to conclude around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. During that time, traffic will be sent west on U.S. 20 to 11th Street where they will then be able to turn around and get back onto I-39 via the ramp for east bound traffic. The ramp to Alpine Road from U.S. 20 will be closed for drivers headed west bound.
Alpine Road is not being used as a detour option because the traffic lights at the top of the ramp cause traffic to back up.
