Rockford boy helps collect school supplies for kids in need

A local 10-year-old has started a program to help his fellow students who may be in need of supplies.

Max Freund started RESCUES 2012 (Reaching Every Student by Collecting Used Education Supplies) after hearing MELD speak at his church school class. Max began collecting used school supplies by calling local schools and asking them to recycle usable school supplies when children cleaned out their desks at the end of the year.

The gently used supplies will be donated to MELD, YSN, Rock House, Rosie's Birthday Club, Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful, and other area agencies who will help get the supplies to the children who need them. Kids at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockford helped to sort the supplies, which included hundreds of bottles of glue, thousands of pencils, and miles of paper.

Email or call Karen Tilly at MELD at 815-633-6353, ext. 11, for more information on the collection drive.
