Winnebago County agencies give tips on how to stay cool

Several agencies in Winnebago County including local hospitals, police departments, and fire departments, joined forces on Monday to give the public tips on staying cool during extremely hot days.

People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, specifically one and one half to two quarts of fluids each day. Water, fruit juice, or fruit-flavored carbonated drinks are all good beverage options, but alcohol and drinks containing caffeine should be avoided. Salt tablets are not a viable substitute for fluids. Seniors especially should drink water, fruit juices, or other fruit drinks at regular intervals throughout the day since aging can cause a decreased thirst sensation.

Local agencies are also warning people of the dangers of fireworks because conditions are currently extremely dry. Anyone using consumer fireworks should make sure a ready source of water is available, such as a connected hose. A fire extinguisher or water bucket will also work. Minor children should not handle or light any consumer fireworks.

The Rockford Park District has also extended the hours for spray pads this week. Spray pads will be turned on at the following locations from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through Thursday and from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday:

  • Beattie Playground
  • Black Hawk Park
  • Brown Park
  • Churchill Park
  • S. Henrietta Park
  • Harmon Park
  • Keye-Mallquist Park
  • Liberty Park
  • Washington Park
  • Mandeville Park

The Rockford Human Services Department has set up a helpline for Winnebago County and Boone County residents to call for local heat-related information. The helpline is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be reached at 815-987-5711. More information can also be found on the Winnebago County Health Department website. In case of emergency, always call 911.
