Winnebago County Animal Services has announced a special adoption program for cats and dogs aged seven years or older.
The Golden Whiskers adoption program will allow any qualified adopter 18 years or older to adopt a Golden Whiskers cat for $20 or dog for $55, half off of the original fee. The program began on Monday, July 2 and replaced the previous Senior to Senior adoption program.
"It's a shame that so many senior pets are often over-looked in shelters," Donna Apgar, Adoption Coordinator, said. "We are hoping the Golden Whiskers senior adoption program will give them the chance they deserve."
According to Animal Services, older pets are great choices because they are already full grown and adopters know what they will get as far as activity level, personality, and sociability. Many pets are already trained to go outside and are not as messy or destructive as younger puppies or kittens. Older pets also do not demand as much time from their owners, although they are still in need of attention and exercise.
All adoptions include a one year vaccination for rabies and distemper, microchip, spay/neuter, one year Winnebago County rabies tag, worming, free wellness exam, and a bag of food.
