Illinois Lottery winner named

The Illinois winner of the world's largest Mega Millions jackpot has been named.

Merle Butler and his wife Patricia of Red Bud, Illinois, purchased the winning ticket at the Red Bud Moto Mart. Their ticket was one of three winners across the country.

The Butlers chose to have their one-time payment of $157,882,070 directly deposited into their bank account. After taxes, they will receive a total of $110,517,449, which is likely the largest payment an individual has ever received from the State of Illinois.

Merle occasionally plays the Lottery and buys a few Quick Pick tickets when the jackpots for the Mega Millions or Powerball reach $100- to $150-million. He plans on continuing the practice. His wife, however, has never purchased a ticket but says she may begin doing so.

Merle has lived in Red Bud for almost his entire life, and waited three weeks after winning to come forward so that his hometown could get some positive publicity. He says his goal now is to return to a life with a normal pace.
