Ralston Elementary students raise money for fellow student

Students at Ralston Elementary School raised money to help a fellow student with her medical bills.

Shelby Martin, a 4th grader at Ralston, was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a liver disease, at 10-weeks-old. She is currently at home awaiting a liver transplant on continuous oxygen and bed rest. Her liver is failing and her oxygen levels are very low.

In 2011, the average cost of a liver transplant was $577,100. Family friends are raising money for Shelby's medical costs through the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA).

Ralston Elementary held a fundraiser for Shelby this past week. Students could bring donations to their classrooms and the classroom that raised the most money could win a pizza party. So far they've raised over $2,600.
