Photo courtesy of the Rockford Fire DepartmentEast State Street has been reopened after a partial collapse of Midway Theater's roof shut it down Friday afternoon.
A portion of the theater's roof came crashing down Thursday night, but police were not made aware of the issue until Friday. As a precaution, authorities shut down the block of East State Street that sits between 3rd and 4th Streets for a short time Friday. The building was inspected for damage and to make sure it would not be a threat to anyone's safety. The street was reopened not long afterward, but to be safe, the neighboring Rockford Area Arts Council was evacuated and remained close for the rest of the day.
The building has been abandoned for years and if it is not shown more care, it could suffer more damage.
A portion of the sidewalk is still roped off, but traffic is no longer inhibited.
