BELVIDERE (WREX)

Family and friends grieve after the loss of two Belvidere North High School cheerleaders in an accident on highway 76.

A memorial was placed at the site where the accident happened. One victim was Brenda Gutierrez and the other Thalia Arredondo. Both girls were 16 years old.

They girls were in a Chevy Cavalier on Friday evening headed south on Highway 76. The car lost control and went into the northbound lane, striking an SUV.  The girls were pronounced dead on the scene. The four people in the SUV were taken to the hospital and treated with non life threatening injuries.

Belvidere North High school opened up it's doors early Saturday morning offering counseling to students who knew the girls. The Boone County Sheriff's department believes the winter weather was a factor in the accident.
