BYRON (WREX) -

Exelon Nuclear's Byron Generating Station has been recognized for supporting the wildlife that surrounds it.

The plant was recently awarded Wildlife at Work certification by the Wildlife Habitat Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the quality and amount of wildlife habitats on corporate, private, and public lands. The award was given as a result of the plant's efforts to establish long-term wildlife habitat enhancements that include providing undisturbed habitats with food, water, cover, and space for animals living on the property.

The Byron Environmental Stewardship Team (BEST) and its employees have undergone many projects in an effort to preserve area wildlife. Some projects include installing nest boxes for bluebirds, wood ducks, and owls. BEST volunteers have noticed an increase in the number of fledglings since the project began.

The Byron Station has partnered with local scout troops to build duck nesting boxes and bat boxes. The plant also recently donated $35,000 to Hoo Haven to go toward the construction of an indoor aquatic wildlife rehabilitation center.
