Byron School District gets grant to improve safety

BYRON (WREX) -

Kids that walk to school in Byron will soon have more options on their route.

The Byron School District received $250,000 in grant money funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Initiative. The program hopes to encourage kids to walk and bike to school as well as ensure their safety while doing so.

Off-road walking and bike paths will be built to connect the Tower Road recreational path from Byron Hills Drive to Kingsway Lane so children living in those neighborhoods will have easier access to Tower Road and all three buildings on the Byron School District campus. The availability of bus transportation will not be affected.

City of Byron engineers plan on working closely with homeowners to eliminate any negative impact on their property as a result of the initiative.
