ROCKTON (WREX) -
The Rockton School District is attempting to reduce expenses by over $1 million for the upcoming school year.
Revenues for the district have decreased steadily over the past few years due to declining state funding and a decrease in student enrollment. Since expenses for the current school year are expected to exceed revenues by $1.4 million to $1.6 million, the school board directed administrators to find expense reductions of over $1 million for the 2012-2013 school year.
Superintendent Michael Greenlee presented a list of reductions to the board Wednesday night that included:
- Freezing administrative salaries
- Reducing Special Education teachers
- Reducing one librarian position
- Reducing nursing hours
- Reducing paraprofessional staff
- Reducing cafeteria and lunch aide staff
- Freezing non-certified salaries
- Cuts in athletics (conference games only)
Superintendent Greenlee said, "These reductions will not be easy for anyone in the Rockton School District. In fact, they will be downright painful." He also explained, "We recognize that many people will take issue with one or more of the specific reductions we have identified, but we are doing the best that we can in a bad situation."
