UPDATE: Rockford teacher contract talks to continue Friday

Posted: Updated:
ROCKFORD (WREX) -

Rockford School District 205 says its talks with the Rockford Education Association on a new teacher contract will continue Friday.

Friday will mark the first time the two sides have talked since late last week, when negotiations were stalled after the REA made its latest offer. On Wednesday, that offer was rejected by the school district.

In addition to Friday's talks, meetings with both sides are also scheduled for next week on Tuesday and Thursday and then again on Monday, February 27.

"We have conducted more than 40 bargaining sessions over the last nine months. The REA proposed a two-year contract retroactive to July 1, 2011. This is unrealistic because we would have to start bargaining the next contract within a few months."

Meanwhile, the Rockford Education Association has scheduled an "all teachers" meeting tonight to discuss the ongoing contract dispute with the district. The meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in downtown Rockford. The meeting was called after contract talks stalled last week.

We will have live coverage of the meeting tonight on 13 News.
