Public housing agencies in Rockford and Freeport were among 17 public housing authorities in the United States to receive funds from HUD.
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development gave almost $500,000 to Rockford and Freeport public housing agencies on Thursday. The money will go toward emergency, safety, and security needs at properties. It will also go toward measures necessary to fight crime and drug activities around the properties.
Rockford will receive $248,100 toward security cameras and a video monitoring system, while Freeport will receive $250,000 toward security cameras, lighting, and video recorders.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said, "Feeling safe in your own home is essential in any neighborhood. These grants allow public housing authorities to make the necessary improvement to ensure families who live in public housing feel safe in their homes and surrounding neighborhoods."
Antonio R. Riley, HUD's Midwest Regional Administrator, commented, "This money will help ensure the safety and security of our public housing residents in Freeport and Rockford and that's something we all value."
Rockford and Freeport were among 17 public housing authorities in the nation to receive funds from HUD. In all, HUD is providing $4.1 million to support emergency, safety, and security needs on public housing properties.
