A Rockford Committee agrees to accept a bid to outsource street sweeping services saving the city a $500,000. The Finance and Personnel Committee voted 3-2 in favor of contracting Elgin Sweeping Service of Chicago.
Alderman Venita Hervey and Alderman Anne Thompson Kelley voted no. No one would lose their jobs in the change. The current six street sweeping employees would move to the city's forestry division.
"Right now on the horizon we have the emerald Ash Borer that's in the City of Rockford. We need to address that. We don't have the staffing right now in our forestry division to do that and what this outsourcing of sweeping does for us is that it does let us funnel our resources into something else that we need to do," says Public Works Director, Tim Hanson.
Council is expected to vote on the plan next week. Meantime, union members say they'll look into ways to save the city money so the employees can keep their street sweeping positions.
