Robbery suspect arrested after running from police

ROCKFORD (WREX) -

A 30-year-old man is in custody after allegedly robbing a person in Rockford.

The victim claims to have been robbed at gunpoint at Highland and E. State Street around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The victim described the alleged suspect to police, who quickly found him nearby. After a short chase, Vernon Smith, 30, was arrested in the 200 block of N. Prospect.

Smith is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful use of weapon by a street gang member, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and no FOETID

Smith is being held in the Winnebago County Jail.
