One Loves Park man is doing his part to help America's injured veterans one step at a time.
Phil Szpicki just finished walking one thousand miles from Rockford to Ground Zero in New York City all while raising money and collecting donations for wounded warriors.
He admits it wasn't easy, but he says he doesn't mind sacrificing for those sacrificed for our freedom.
Retired Loves Park police officer Phil Szpicki says the he found inspiration a long the way of his journey.
"A friend of mine told me, never be sorry for something you did, just for something you didn't do. So I figured, well, ok I'll get stubborn and I'll finish this out."
Along the way he made pit stops at national landmarks like the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty in New York City, even though he admits the big apple isn't the easiest walk.
"Going over the bridges, getting lost the dangerous traffic."
Szpicki says he's proud to raise awareness for wounded veterans but right now he's ready to get home
"It'll be a joyous reunion it'll probably be one of the happiest days of my life."
During his walk Phil Szpicki wore a plastic board telling people how they could donate to his walk and the help out America's Disabled vets you can donate at http://www.911vetswalk.com
