UPDATE: 3 suspects face long list of charges in Marie's Pizza shooting

Posted: Updated:

The three surviving suspects in the deadly officer-involved armed robbery turned shooting at a Rockford pizza restaurant face several charges.

Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato announced during a news conference Tuesday that Brandon Sago, 22; Desmond Bellmon, 23; Lamar Coates, 23; all of Rockford, have been charged with eight counts of first degree murder, or felony murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, and three counts of attempted armed robbery. They are all still recovering at area hospitals in serious condition. They will all be held without bail after they are released from the hospitals.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says Deputy Frank Pobjecky, 29, was inside Marie's Pizza, 1513 Charles Street, as a customer when the four suspects tried to rob the owner around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The investigation shows Deputy Pobjecky got involved in a struggle for a weapon with the suspects during the robbery attempt and Michael Sago, 16, was shot and killed. The three other suspects were also shot by Deputy Pobjecky.

Autopsy results released by the Winnebago County Coroner's office Monday show Michael Sago died of multiple gun shot wounds. Sago was a student at Auburn High School in Rockford.

Deputy Pobjecky has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into the shooting continues. That investigation is being led by the Rockford Police Department. The sheriff's department says it will conduct its own administrative review of the case once RPD completes its investigation.

Bruscato said Tuesday, the case will eventually go before a grand jury, but it's too early to say if they will look at Deputy Pobjecky's actions and decision to fire the gun during the robbery.

The sheriff's department says the preliminary investigation shows Deputy Pobjecky appeared to react in a manner which is consistent with departmental policy and his training when faced with a violent, life-threatening confrontation with multiple armed robbery suspects.
