Michael D. Sago of Rockford was shot along with three other suspects by an off duty Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy at Marie's Pizza just after 10:30 last night. Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says Sago died on the scene and was pronounced dead at 1:20am.
Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson says the formal charges are coming soon and they plan to interview the suspects once they're able to talk to detectives.
There was a lot of mixed reaction in the neighborhood from folks who were surprised to some who said it's just a sign of the times.
Austin Todd took a break from watching football when he stepped outside and saw one of the suspects.
"I was outside, looked over at Marie's looked over and heard gun shots I looked over and saw a guy limp out of the store," he said.
He called 9-1-1 right after and is still shaken up from what he saw.
"I've never seen that before in my life and I never want to see that again. No one should have to see that."
Other neighbors came to the scene soon after.
"They had everything taped off, no one was coming down Charles, down 12th, down 5th no one could get through at all. We come out here and we had seen the body laying right here that was covered in the white sheet," one told 13 NEWS.
Joshua Hardt was at home when police found one of the suspects in his back yard.
"It makes me feel scared for my son, but if they ever try to come up and do something to me, I'm going to fight back."
Chief Epperson doesn't believe this is a case of excessive force, but of an off duty officer being in the right place at the right time.
"The fact is four people entered a business with intent to rob with a handgun. That's first and foremost the most important thing for the public to understand and this was a robbery. There happened to be a police officer who was off duty, who took the appropriate action from what we can see - that'll be the state's attorney's office. And there were other potential victims at the location ."
The investigation is heading to State's Attorney's office. All officer involved shootings are investigated, but this one is a little different because the officer was off duty.
