Camp helps kids deal with loss of a loved one

Posted:

ROCKFORD (WREX) -  Dozens of Rockford area kids, who've lost someone close to them, get the chance to get away.

They'll be going camping for a long weekend in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.  The Northern Illinois Hospice and Grief Center is partnering with The Moyer Foundation for Camp Erin.  It's for kids and teens between the ages of 6 and 17.

The U.S. Census reports that more than 32,000 children between Rockford and the Chicago metro area have suffered the loss of a family member.  Research says they need support, or else they face higher rates of emotional problems and substance abuse.  Camp Erin teaches kids healthy ways to cope with grief and has bereavement experts and trained volunteers to support the kids.  The camp is free for the kids who go.  They'll be gone Thursday through Sunday.
