ROCKFORD (WREX) - Rockford Police say a couple beat a 3 year-old little girl to death. The girl's mom and the woman's boyfriend are under arrest facing first degree murder charges. Investigators say someone inside the home called 911 for medical help. But by the time paramedics got there they say the little girl was dead and signs pointed to a homicide.

"It appears Kaitlyn Head was beaten for a period of time," says Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark of the Rockford Police Department.

He says he believes the beatings to 3 year-old Kaitlyn went on for more than one day. Investigators think she was not the only one hurt inside the home at 614 11th Street. Her 4 yeaR-old and 10 year-old sisters were taken into protective custody.

"The kids had been injured also and they're being examined by medical staff but they are both going to be treated for their injuries and released," says Deputy Chief Lindmark.

He says the two other girls' injuries are similar to Kaitlyn's but are not considered as serious. Police charged their mother, Melanie Grant, 29 and her boyfriend, Duran Johnson, 37, with Kaitlyn's death.

Police say Grant had not lived at her home on 11th Street for very long, But news still scared neighbors.

"It is a shock, you know you never know who is going to do whatever to their kids but its shocking that a death of a child is going to happen in your neighborhood," says neighbor, Tanya Alexander.

No word on if the couple will face any further charges in connection to the injuries on the two older children. Police say the investigation is not finished.
