Barbara Berman wins annual Uram Award

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois held its 2010 Annual Event on Thursday, October 28 at 6:00 pm at Giovanni's Restaurant, 610 N. Bell School Road, Rockford.

At the event, the 6th annual Charles G. Uram Lifetime Service Award was presented on behalf of the Cosmopolitan Club of Rockford. The Uram Award recognizes and celebrates the achievements of a person who embodies the values demonstrated by the late Charles (Chuck) G. Uram. Chuck Uram passed away on December 24, 2004, and is remembered as a friend and mentor to the Cosmopolitan Club of Rockford and to the Rockford community as a whole.

Nominees for the 2010 Charles G. Uram Lifetime Service Award were:

1. Barbara Berman – Ethnic Heritage Museum

2. Donald Mosser – Discovery Center Museum

3. Daniel Nicholas - RAMP

The winner of the 2010 Uram Award was Barbara Berman. Ethnic Heritage Museum, the nonprofit organization that nominated Barbara, received a $5,000 prize from the Cosmopolitan Club of Rockford. Barb Berman is an avid volunteer and champion for our community. The list of agencies that have benefited from her time is immense – Ethnic Heritage Museum, Red Shoe Run, Greenwich Village Art Fair, Auburn High School Kiwanis Key Club, Rock Valley Heritage Kiwanis, Rosie's Birthday Club, and the Community Foundation's In Youth We Trust program.

One of Barb's most significant volunteer jobs is serving as the Advisor of the Auburn High School Key Club. Through this role, Barb mentors students and teaches the importance of community volunteerism. One former Key Club President describes some of the most important lessons Barb imparted: how to be a more compassionate person, how to embrace diversity, how to boldly pursue life opportunities, and how to bear disappointment with grace.

Barb was instrumental in the organization of Becca's Closet here in Rockford. Becca's Closet serves as a "boutique" that collects formal wear and re-distributes it to girls who would not have the proper clothing for special occasions such as Prom and Homecoming. Each year, over 500 dresses are given away.

Barb's latest endeavor has been Rosie's Birthday Club. This organization hosts birthday parties for underserved children, providing them with a birthday party and gift.

Barbara joins prestigious past winners of the Charles G. Uram Lifetime Service Award: Dale Sanders (2005), Harry Ritter (2006), Dan Loescher (2007), Jim Keeling (2008) and Phil Turner (2009).

Incorporated in 1958, the Cosmopolitan Club of Rockford contributes to the community's well-being through charitable donations and volunteer service with a special emphasis on supporting efforts to prevent and find a cure for diabetes.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois serves as the area's leading non-profit provider of grants and scholarships. Its mission is to build permanent resources for the immediate and future needs of the people of Northern Illinois.
