ROCKFOR (WREX) - The new Rock Valley College Learning and Opportunity Center opens to the public tomorrow. Its location in the heart of Rockford helps solve transportation troubles for people on the district's west side.
Potential student, Nicole Stewart lives so close, she can walk.
"I think it's a wonderful facility. I think it's more convenient for more people that stays on the West side, than having all of us to travel all the way to the East side campus," says Stewart.
Its four classrooms boasts enough room for more than 100 students.
"We're offering just a handful of general education, basic education type courses, History English Biology, courses like that," says Student Development Associate Vice President, Amy Diaz.
The center also offers guidance to students with one-on-one academic counseling and financial aid information.
"We're working on getting set up both a tutoring center and a testing center so students are able to take the placement tests that will allow them to take appropriate courses based on their learning level," says Learning and Opportunity Center Director, Suzanne Dooley.
When students come to our campus or go on to another university we want to make sure they are fully prepared," says Rock Valley College President, Dr. Jack Becherer.
As the college grows, Rock Valley leaders hope to add more classes and evolve to student needs.
"Classes will start at 8:30 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. Times will vary depending on student need and we are looking to the community to help us define what that need will be," explains Dooley.
Fall classes start next week. There's still time to enroll.
