ROCKFORD (WREX) - A 20-year-old man has been charged in the attempted robbery shooting and beating of the owner of Villa Di Roma Pizza.

Police say John Shabazz attacked the owner of the restaurant at 1:54 a.m. Thursday after he couldn't get any money from him. The 69-year-old owner was shot once and suffered a cut to his head in the attack. He was treated and released from an area hospital.

Shabazz ran away, but was later arrested in the yard of a home in the 2600 block of Kinsey. Police used the LEAC Helicopter and a K9 unit from Belvidere to help capture Shabazz.

He is now charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm. He's being held in the Winnebago County Jail.

Villa Di Roma is located at 1620 Harrison Avenue.
