MACHESNEY PARK (WREX) - A Machesney Park home is completely destroyed after an explosion that started in the garage.

The first report came in just after 2:00 p.m. for a house explosion that sparked a large fire at 57 Wilshire Blvd., which is near Harlem and Main in Machesney Park. "It exploded and we didn't think anything was on fire and then I started seeing smoke pour out of the attic and then I called 911 real quick. About two minutes after that the whole thing went up like crazy," said Robert Wilson, who lives nearby.

A dozen or so fire departments arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed in flames. Some neighbors who talked to 13 News say they saw flames reach 15 to 20 feet above the roof.

North Park Fire Chief Steven Pearson says the wind pushed those flames to a house next door, causing major damage to the outside. The house where the explosion started is a complete loss.

Nobody was inside the house at 57 Wilshire Blvd. when the explosion occurred. Pearson says the people who lived there just moved out a week ago.

The family who lives in the home next door was not home at the time. Firefighters managed to rescue their dog from the flames. They reported no injuries.

Firefighters say the explosion started in the garage. It took crews about 20 minutes to put it out. They still don't know the cause. The State Fire Marshal and crews stayed on scene for several hours to investigate.
