HARLEM TOWNSHIP (WREX) - A group of candidates accuses Harlem Township's supervisor of breaking the law.
Jerry Lemmons will challenge Supervisor Doug Aurand in the April election. He and four other candidates running for Harlem Township Trustee claim Aurand uses township equipment for his campaign and wears campaign stickers to polling places. "First of all, it's against Illinois statute. Against the law. So anytime a public figure blatantly breaks the law, it's a bad example."
Aurand says just like anyone who might need to use the townhip's phone or fax machine, he pays for it himself. And he says he's never electioneered. "I've held public office for 38 years. I know the do's and don'ts of public office and I would never do those sort of things and my employees would never do those sort of things."
Lemmons filed a formal complaint with the Illinois Board of Elections.
