BELOIT (WREX) - Beloit police get a new tool to track down shooting suspects. It's called the Shot Spotter.
For now it'll work across a one mile area in Beloit and immediately track gunfire to see where it came from. That way, police can respond more quickly. Chief Sam Lathrop with the Beloit Police Department says, "In many cases, you can hear the gunshot, and then you'll hear a car accelerating in the background. So the dispatchers are going to be able to say to the officers, 'We've got a report of shots fired from Shot Spotter. This is the closest address to it."
About 35 cities across the U.S. use Shot Spotter. The company that makes it says violent crime in those areas is down at least 30 percent.
