Belvidere Mayor Fred Brereton

ROCKFORD - Area leaders ask for $1.132 billion as part of a future federal economic stimulus package. The 33-page request was mailed to Washington yesterday, along with high hopes for its approval. "We put together a pretty good list of projects for consideration," says Belvidere Mayor Fred Brereton, R, chairman of the Rockford Metropolitan Agency for Planning.
And quite a list it is. Everything from a new animal control building in Boone County to a white-water rafting park in downtown Rockford to a new civic center in Machesney Park.
But the centerpiece of the plan is passenger rail, $181 million worth. "This was mailed yesterday to Sen. (Dick) Durbin and Congressman (Don) Manzullo and we'll see how it advances through the system," Brereton says.
Brereton says he and other leaders may travel to Washington if needed to lobby for the package.
